We were asked to design a small back courtyard enclosed by three walls and the townhouse itself. It was particularly challenging in that there is no sun in the winter to melt the snow and very hot sun in the summer. A variety of shrubs and trees were chosen for height, texture and color. The client requested specifically for wildlife supporting plants. The walls had a distinct and bold color pallet. We choose contrasting plants that would stand out through all the seasons and thrive in this microclimate environment.
The buff random flagstone was selected to give a more organic feeling to the contemporary courtyard. We added a water feature for a cooling effect and to distort the neighboring noise. A small deck was added for seating to overlook the courtyard.
