Lakewood Garden House
Xeriscape Honor Roll, Denver Water Department 2001
This Lakewood residence was typical of the post-war suburban style of the 1950s–all lawn and pfitzers. Our design solution introduced semi-arid Rocky Mountain trees, shrubs, and perennials with low water needs. The decision to replace most of the lawn with a natural, wildland plant community has greatly reduced the use of water. Ornamental grasses and groundcovers emphasize texture, color and rhythm along with existing mature conifers within the landscape. Low limestone walls and flagstone paths wander and define the grounds. The custom-designed garden house distinguishes the backyard while the post and beam patio cover with additional screening enhances the livability and architectural interest.
